Sunflowers — the painting Vincent thought was worth signing

Vincent van Gogh painted his Sunflowers series in Arles in August 1888 to decorate the bedroom of his friend Paul Gauguin, who was about to come and live with him in the Yellow House. He worked at extraordinary speed, sometimes finishing a canvas in a single day, racing the flowers as they wilted in the southern French heat.

The Amsterdam version, with its thick yellow impasto and bright turquoise signature on the vase, is the only one in the series Vincent thought was worthy of his name. It hangs on floor 1 of the museum, in the same room as Almond Blossom and The Bedroom — three paintings most visitors come specifically to see, and three of the most reproduced images in the history of Western art.

How much are Van Gogh Museum tickets?
General admission for adults is €22. Visitors under 18 enter free of charge, as do Museumkaart holders, ICOM members, Iamsterdam City Card holders and one companion of a disabled visitor.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — booking is mandatory and the museum does not sell tickets at the door. Tickets are sold only with timed slots and weekend dates often sell out a week or more ahead in spring and summer.
Where exactly is the museum?
On Museumplein in Amsterdam, opposite the Rijksmuseum and next to the Stedelijk. The address is Museumplein 6, 1071 DJ. Trams 2, 5 and 12 stop at Van Baerlestraat, a 2-minute walk away. You can find out more on our visitor's guide.
How long should I plan for the visit?
Most visitors spend between 1.5 and 2 hours inside. With the multimedia tour, allow up to 3 hours. Your timed slot is for entry only — you can stay as long as you like once you are inside, but make sure to pick the best time to visit to make the most of the experience.
Are Sunflowers always on display?
Yes, except during very rare conservation work. The painting is permanently shown on floor 1 alongside The Bedroom, Almond Blossom and a rotating selection of self-portraits.
Can I take photos inside?
No — photography is not allowed in the permanent collection because Van Gogh's paintings are extremely sensitive to flash and prolonged exposure. The museum shop sells excellent reproductions of every major work. You can check our page about rules and regulations for further information.
Is the museum wheelchair accessible?
Fully. All four floors and the Kurokawa wing are reached by lift, doorways are wide and the entire route is step-free. Free wheelchair loan is available at the cloakroom — reserve in advance to guarantee one. Make sure to check the accessibility page to plan your visit accordingly.
Do children enter for free?

Is the multimedia tour worth it?
Strongly recommended for first-time visitors. The narration uses Vincent's own letters to his brother Theo, so you hear the artist describe each painting in his own words. €3.50 add-on, available in 9 languages. Otherwise, there are also high-quality guided tours to take your through the most important pieces of the museum.
Can I combine the visit with the Rijksmuseum?
Yes — the Rijksmuseum is a 3-minute walk across Museumplein and combo tickets are available. We recommend splitting them across two days, though, as both museums are intense and back-to-back visits are tiring.
